Lobos Celebrate Senior Day Saturday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico softball team suffered a 7-3 loss on Senior Day to San Diego State on Saturday despite senior Chelsea Johnson and sophomore Cameryn O’Grady’s homeruns. The Lobos are now 1-1 in the series with game three set for Sunday at 12 p.m.

Following the game, the Lobos honored Johnson and fellow senior Krissy Fortner. Fortner started in the circle in her second-to-last game at Lobo Softball Field after earning her 16th career save in game one of the series on Friday.

The Lobos got out to a quick start, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, sophomore Cameryn O’Grady hit a blast that bounced off the wall in right center and back into the field, landing her on third with her fourth triple of the season. She scored when Johnson singled through the left side, 1-0 Lobos.

The Aztecs posted two in the the top of the third on a two-run homer to take a 2-1 advantage, but O’Grady tied it up in the bottom of the frame with her second homerun of the weekend, her fourth of the season, 2-2.

SDSU scored in the next three straight innings to get out to a 7-2 lead. In the top of the fourth, two runs scored on two hits followed by a one-run fifth inning courtesy of three straight singles. In the top of the sixth, the Aztecs extended their lead with back-to-back singles by Shelby Thompson and Katie Byrd before a two-run triple by Taylor Stewart.

Johnson’s homer came in the bottom of the sixth with the Lobos trailing 7-2. She fouled one off to the right before sending a shot over the left-field scoreboard, 7-3. The homer marks her ninth of the season, second on the weekend, and 33rd of her career.
 

On the day, O’Grady and Johnson led the Lobos with two hits apiece along with one each from junior D’Andra DeFlora and freshman Taylor Jones.

UNM was outhit by the Aztecs 15-6 and stranded 11 runners on base compared to five for the Lobos.

In the circle, Fortner gets tabbed with the loss allowing four runs in 3.1 innings before sophomore Jensen Main entered in relief. She pitched the final 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. UNM is now 13-36 (6-14 MW) while SDSU improves to 17-30 on the season (8-12 MW).

UNM returns to action for its final game of the three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. The game will be the last one of the home season for UNM before the Lobos return to the road for one last series at Boise State.
