INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team has been announced as one of nine sports at UNM to earn a perfect score of 1000 in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate Institutional Report, the NCAA announced publicly. This year’s report is for the 2016-17 academic year.

The 1000 score far surpasses the NCAA mandated 930 mark and is demonstrative of the continued dedication of the Lobos to succeed both on the court and in the classroom.

APR is a combination of eligibility and retention scores. For each semester, a student-athlete can account for two points, one for returning to school, and one for being eligible. The total points accumulated is divided by the total points possible, and then multiplied by 1000 to get the raw score.

Of the nine UNM sports that recorded perfect 1000s for the 2016-17 academic year, men’s basketball was one of just four men’s teams to do so, including golf, skiing and tennis, while six women’s teams including cross country, golf, beach volleyball, swimming and diving and tennis achieved the feat.

More on the UNM Athletics report

The last time the UNM men’s basketball team earned a score of 1000 was in the 2012-13 academic year, marking the third straight year of the perfect score.

One of the keys to UNM’s APR success is the Lobo Center for Student-Athlete Success, which houses UNM’s athletics’ Student Success Managers, who oversee the academic progress of UNM’s student-athletes. The LCSAS has two complete computer labs, meeting and private study spaces, classroom, and tutoring stations as well as housing UNM’s Student Success Staff.
