Men's Basketball Adds Transfer Manigault
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Head coach Paul Weir and The University of New Mexico men’s basketball program have officially added another transfer to the 2018-19 roster in Corey Manigault, who originally started his college basketball career as a highly-recruited freshman at Pitt. Manigault signed his National Letter of Intent (NLI) on Tuesday.
Manigault, a 6-8 sophomore forward, comes to UNM from Indian Hills Community College where he competed in 2017-18. He shot 57.7 percent from the floor and fired 44.4 percent from behind the arc while averaging 6.1 points per game over 22 games.
He made 18 appearances in his freshman season at Pitt and had a standout high school career, ranked 136th in the nation by Rivals earning him offers from Division I programs including Georgetown, Maryland, UMass, Rhode Island, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Xavier, as listed by ESPN.
“Corey is an excellent student in the classroom and is the perfect hybrid post player as we continue to add to our ball club,” Coach Weir said. “We now have the size on our roster to be able to play our style and Corey will be a very big part of that.”
Manigault competed for Paul VI at the high school level in Fairfax, Virginia where he was named first-team all-state and second team All-WCAC as a senior after averaging 15.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. He helped lead his squad to a 22-11 record and a state championship appearance. He was also named first team DMVelite All-Nova, second team All-WCAC and honorable mention All-Met in his career.
As a sophomore at Paul VI, Manigault helped his varsity squad to a 31-6 record and a WCAC Championship as well as a VISAA State Championship. He was also an Honor Roll recipient throughout his high school career.
“Coach Weir and the staff made me feel like I belong just as well as the other players,” Manigault said of why he chose UNM. “It’s a family environment that’s looking to build and it’s something I would love to be a part of.”
Manigault is set to arrive on campus to train with the team this summer and as a junior college transfer, he will be immediately eligible with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
