The Lobos – Ingrid Gutierrez and Darian Zachek

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team sent two individuals to compete at the NCAA Women’s Regional that started on May 7th and ended on May 9th. The two Lobos that earned a spot among the field was senior, Ingrid Guiterrez and junior, Darian Zachek

Gutierrez ended the first round with a total score of 2-over 74 and landed a spot in the top-50 on the leaderboard. Zachek carded 5-over 77 on her first round after struggling to find her groove. Both Lobos had a strong showing as individuals for New Mexico and for how competitive this regional is, both Gutierrez and Zachek showed a lot of promise after the first day of play.

“They both hit the ball really well and hit a lot of greens, but their putters were stale,” said head coach Jill Trujillo after day one. “Now that the nerves have been worked out I think their putting will be much better tomorrow.”

Round two for the Lobos went a little bit smoother than the first round. Gutierrez held her spot in the top-50 and ended the day with the same score of 2-over 74 leaving her new total at 4-over 148. Zachek climbed up the leaderboard after shooting par-72 on the day and giving her a new total score at 5-over 149. Trujillo went on to say that both putted a lot better and they we’re steady throughout the round.

Closing out her final round of her collegiate career, Gutuierrez arguably had one of the most consistent showings here in California after earning a final round score of 2-over 74 for the third day in a row. Her final score at the NCAA Regional stood at 6-over 222. Zachek finished her 2017-18 season strong with a final round score of 6-over 78 and carded a total score of 11-over 227. These two Lobos have brought an incredible amount of knowledge and experience to the team’s overall successes the season and their showing at the NCAA Regional proved that New Mexico is a competitive program and can hang with the best.

“I’m proud we had Darian and Ingrid represent UNM at the NCAA Regional,” said Trujillo. “I appreciate the competitive spirit in them both.”
