ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It’s been a learning experience for the nation’s youngest baseball team, and another lesson comes this weekend in an interesting form … playing with its back to the wall.  That’s the scenario facing the New Mexico Lobos as the squad hosts second place San Diego State with a last chance to get into position for the Mountain West Tournament, and a chance to play spoiler along the way.

The Lobos will host San Diego State starting on Friday at 6:30 at Santa Ana Star Field, with the series continuing Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.  Additionally, fans can get a double dose of Lobo/Aztec action as the Lobo softball team is hosting San Diego State on the same three days, playing at 6 p.m. on Friday and then noon on both Saturday and Sunday.

UNM is entering the weekend on a four-game losing streak, having been swept at San Jose State last weekend, losing three straight one-run games, and then losing a mid-week game at New Mexico State.  In that game, the Lobos, due to injuries and rest, started freshmen at all nine defensive positions, and they would have had a freshman at designated hitter if it wasn’t for an exam that Chris Dunn stayed in Albuquerque to take.

The Lobos enter the weekend 3.5 games out of third and fourth place, which are currently shared by Air Force and UNLV.  With San Jose State at UNLV and Fresno State at Nevada, UNM is not out of the conference tournament picture, as only the top four will make it to San Diego May 24-27.
