BREMERTON, Wash. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team ended the first day of the 2018 Mountain West Championships in eighth place out of 11 teams. UNM shot a 7-over 295 in the first of three rounds at the Gold Mountain Golf Club. 

The Lobos were led by freshman Galven Green. Green sits tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard after shooting a 3-under 69 in round one, which is tied for the third-lowest score of the day. Senior Gustavo Morantes followed, shooting a 2-over 74 in the first round. Redshirt senior Andre Garcia and junior Augustin Holé tied for third on the team, each shooting a 4-over 76. Finally, junior Sean Carlon was a single stroke behind after shooting a 5-over 77.

Three teams sit tied for the lead following Friday’s round including UNLV, Colorado State and San Diego State. The three teams all shot 4-under 284.

The Mountain West Championships will continue tomorrow with one round with the first tee time being set at 9 p.m. MT. Carlon will be the first Lobo to tee off, beginning his round at 9:40 p.m. MT.
