ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The month of April hasn’t been kind to the Lobo baseball team, but there is plenty of time to turn the month around, and it starts Friday as the Lobos open a key three-game series against the second-place UNLV Rebels in a big weekend for not just UNM, but for Lobo Athletics as there are eight home games over the weekend in and around Santa Ana Star Field.
The Lobos currently sit at 12-22-1 overall and 6-12 in the Mountain West, last in the conference, while UNLV is 28-12 overall and 9-6 in the Mountain West. The Lobos are just two games out of the final conference tournament slot as the weekend starts. The Lobos will throw usual weekend starters Justin Slaten on Friday and Cody Dye on Saturday. Sunday’s starter is to be determined.
The weekend series is one of two going on, as across the plaza Lobo softball also hosts a weekend series against Utah State. The baseball series game times are 6:30 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. The softball series takes place at 6 p.m. on Friday, and noon on both Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, Saturday will feature a doubleheader with Lobo Tennis. The women’s team hosts Air Force at 10 a.m., and the men’s team plays Air Force afterwards for its senior day.
With all the events, there are plenty of promotions as the weekend is Lobopalooza, with tickets all weekend just $2! For Friday, the softball game starts at 6 p.m. and the baseball game starts at 6:30 p.m. and it will be UNM’s annual “Bark in the Park” and “Teal” game. Bring your furry friends but don’t forget their shot records and registration. First 100 dogs into the park will get a container of dog treats from Clark’s Pet Emporium. The Lobos have teamed up with Lobo Respect to create the “Teal Night” for these games to bring awareness for sexual assault and the victims.
On Saturday softball will start at noon and baseball will follow at 2 p.m. Make sure to wear your pink for Lobos Love Pink. Arrive early for giveaways from UNM Cancer Center. Finally, on Sunday we will be celebrating Earth Day with free yoga in the park 45 minutes prior to each game by a Defined Fitness instructor. Also this day Donate Life will be at the games with giveaways. We will also have our “Sunday Funday Youth Day” where kids ages up to 15 can run the bases post game as well as get autographs from the softball team! Sunday the softball game will start at noon and baseball’s first pitch at 1 pm.
