ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico softball team fell in a non-conference matchup on Monday afternoon at UTEP. The Lobos dropped a 7-0 final to the Miners.
Junior Monica Salas led the Lobos (11-29, 4-8 MW) with a pair of hits on the day while sophomore Jensen Main pitched all 6.0 innings in the circle. Main struck out four batters on the day while allowing seven runs, five earned, on eight hits. She is now 5-14 on the season and has pitched seven complete games.
UTEP (8-26, 7-11 MW) got the scoring started early in the bottom of the first after three straight Lobos went down in the top of the frame. The Miners scored just one run on three hits including a one-out double. A pick off from freshman catcher Sydney Broderick at third base to Salas registered the second out of the inning but back-to-back singles scored the run, 1-0 UTEP.
Two groundouts and a fly out made for a quick top of the second for the Lobos and UTEP added three more in the bottom of the frame to get out to a 4-0 lead.
Both teams were held in the third, fourth and fifth innings and but in the bottom of the sixth, the Miners pulled further ahead with another trio of runs on a pair of hits and no Lobo errors.
Down 7-0 in the top of the seventh, the Lobos threatened a two-out rally.
Senior Chelsea Johnson led off with a single to center field but was followed by back-to-back strikeouts. Salas followed with a single through the right side to put a pair of runners on base, but a pop up ended the inning and the game.
The Miners outhit the Lobos just 8-4 on the day, led by two players that each posted two hits. Miner pitcher Julia Wright earns the win after allowing four hits and posting six strikeouts. She improves to 5-14 with the win.
The Lobos were led by Salas’ two hits as well as a hit apiece from Johnson and Broderick.
UNM is back in action on the weekend as it hosts Utah State for a three-game series Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m., 12 p.m. and 12 p.m., respectively. All three games will be at Lobo Softball Field.
