Lobos Third Among Non-P5s in Latest Learfield Standings

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The latest Learfield Director’s Cup Standings have been released, and The University of New Mexico is once again the highest-ranking Mountain West institution, and the third-highest non-Power 5 school, as the Lobos are currently 44th.
 
The next set of standings will be released late Thursday on April 12.
 
The Lobos trail only Princeton, which is 31st, and Villanova, which is 42nd after winning the men’s basketball championship on Monday.  Villanova also picked up 50 points for women’s basketball along with the 100 for men’s basketball.
 
The Lobos, which picked up 100 points for women’s cross country for winning the national title in November, have scored 186.75 over the winter seasons.  The Lobos picked up 69 points for a seventh-place national finish in skiing, 66.75 points for a 10th place finish in women’s track and field, and 51 points for a 21st place finish in men’s track and field.
 
Overall, the Lobos have 286.75 points.  UNM has now scored at least 276 points in each of the last 12 years.  In 2016-17, UNM finished 61st, scoring 423 points.
 
Other Mountain West institutions in the top 100 include Boise State (46th), Air Force (63rd), Colorado State (67th), Utah State (73rd), Wyoming (79th) and San Diego State (93rd).  The Lobos currently rank ahead of regional schools such as BYU (45th), TCU (48th), Denver (55th), Arizona (56th), Oklahoma (58th) and Texas Tech (92nd).
 
“To be ranked as one of the top institutions in the country in the latest Learfield Director’s Cup rankings is a tremendous accomplishment,” said Director of Athletics Eddie Nuñez.  “We are able to do some special things despite the many challenges we face. Credit has to go to the hard work of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, who are continuing to accomplish great things athletically, academically and in the community.
