Lobo Football Visits Desert Ridge Middle Over Break

Community ServiceCommunity Service

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Spring Break is a time of sunshine.  It’s when college kids get a week off to unwind.  They head to Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach or San Padre Island.  Some end up in San Diego, and some make it a true vacation in Mexico.

That’s what most kids do.  If you are members of the Lobo Football team, how do you spend Spring Break?  By visiting area Middle Schools, reading to kids and participating in gym class, teaching children about exercise. Several Lobo receivers made it out to Desert Ridge Middle School last Tuesday to do just that.  Delane Hart-Johnson, Patrick Reed, Rafael Hidalgo, Jay Griffin IV, Thomas Vieira and others made the trek, and from the looks of the photos, it’s hard to tell who was having more fun.

For student-athletes like Delane Hart-Johnson, his words ring especially true.  Hart-Johnson missed a year of football with UNM after a car accident nearly ended his life.  His brother Will Parks is in the NFL, and Hart-Johnson has even been a bat boy for the Philadelphia Phillies, his hometown team.  Delane, like many Lobos, have hit not just schools, but have had talks with troubled teens as well.
