Lobos Land in 12th after Day One in Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team ended the first day of the Lamkin San Diego Classic in 12th place out of 16 teams following two rounds. The Lobos finished round one with a 10-over 298 and finished the second round with a 1-over 289 for an 11-over 587 total.

Redshirt senior Andre Garcia led UNM’s five golfers, finishing Monday with a 1-over 73 and an even 72 in rounds one and two respectively for a 1-over 145 total. Garcia was followed by juniors Sean Carlon and Augustin Holé, who finished one stroke apart with 4-over 148 and 5-over 149 totals. Carlon finished round one with a 3-over 75 and finished round two with a 1-over 73, while Holé shot a 5-over 77 in round one with an even 72 in round two. Redshirt freshman Ross Sinclair and sophomore Sam Dickey were close behind. Sinclair shot a 6-over 78 in round one but bounced back to an even 72 in round two for a 6-over 150 total. Dickey shot a 1-over 73 in round one and a 6-over 78 in round two for a 7-over 151 total.

The Lobos also had two golfers competing as individuals at the Lamkin Classic including freshman Galven Green and redshirt senior Ben Tolsma. Green occupies the third individual spot after two rounds, shooting a 2-under 70 in round one and a 2-over 74 in round two for an even 144 total. Tolsma shot a 5-over 77 in round one and a 2-over 74 in round two for a 7-over 151 total.

No. 1 ranked Oklahoma State led all 16 teams after two rounds, holding a commanding 17-stroke lead over second place. The Cowboys shot an 18-under 270 in round one, the best round by any team for the day, and a 5-under 283 in round two for a 23-under 553 total. Host San Diego State sits in second entering Tuesday, shooting a 3-under 285 in both rounds for a 6-under 570 total. North Carolina and No. 11 Texas Tech tied for third, with the Tar Heels finishing with an even 288 in round one and a 4-under 284 in round two, while the Red Raiders shot a 4-over 292 in round one and an 8-under 280 in round two. Both teams finished Monday with a 4-under 572 total.

The Lamkin San Diego Classic will continue on Tuesday, March 13 at the San Diego Country Club with one final round beginning at 10:30 a.m. MT.
