LAS VEGAS, NEV. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is set to take on the San Diego State Aztecs in a battle for the Mountain West title on Saturday, March 10, at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT. Last time the Lobos were in the championship game was in 2014, when they claimed the crown.
The Lobos are 4-1 in program history in the Mountain West Championship title game and have emerged victorious their last four appearances in 2005, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Both teams have won four tournament titles in program history and the squad that prevails on Saturday will secure its league-best fifth crown and the league’s automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
UNM and SDSU have met twice in the championship game, in 2012 and 2014, both won by the Lobos.
Saturday marks the first time a No. 3 seed has advanced to the championship game of the Mountain West Tournament since 2013.
Both teams are riding substantial win streaks heading into Saturday’s game. UNM is on a seven-win streak while SDSU has won its last eight.
In another similarity, both teams are led by first-year head coaches at their respective institution as UNM head coach Paul Weir enters 19-14 in his first season with the Lobos while Brian Dutcher is 21-10 in his.
The Lobos are 47-38 all-time against San Diego State including a 79-75 victory at home in The Pit on Jan. 20 this year. The Lobos are 5-2 in neutral site matchups.
