ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico softball is set to open its 2018 home slate on Friday, March 9 through Sunday, March 11 with the Lobo Classic. The 10-game event will feature four teams including UNM (2-17), Saint Mary’s (5-16), Howard (2-16) and Sacramento State (4-7). The Lobos will play five games including doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday followed by a single game on Sunday.

The Lobos enter into the tournament with a 3-17 record overall. The team most recently took one of five games at the J. McHaney Classic in Lubbock, Texas, topping Texas Tech 14-13 in 10 innings on a Chelsea Johnson grand slam in the top of the final inning. UNM will face Saint Mary’s and Sacramento State twice and Howard once throughout the three days of the Lobo Classic.
Johnson continues to be the Lobos’ top hitter 20 games into the season, batting a team-high .333 average in 20 games. Johnson also leads the team in hits (19), home runs (4), RBI (13), total bases (35) and slugging percentage (.614). Sophomore shortstop Cameryn O’Grady is also hitting above .300, batting .308 with a team-best five doubles.
Defensively, senior Krissy Fortner and sophomore Jensen Main both lead the squad in the circle with 23 strikeouts apiece.
The Lobos will remain in Albuquerque following the Lobo Classic, taking on UNLV in a three-game series on Friday, March 16 through Sunday, March 18. UNM will then host in-state rival New Mexico State on Wednesday, March 21.
