Jackson and Mathis Earn Mountain West Honors

LAS VEGAS, NEV. — Senior Antino Jackson and junior Anthony Mathis of The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team have been named to All-Mountain West teams, the conference announced Tuesday. Jackson was named to the All-Defensive Team and earned a spot on the Honorable Mention squad while Mathis was named to the All-Mountain West Third Team for his outstanding efforts this season.

Mathis has been one of the top 3-point shooters in the nation this season, firing at a clip of 49.5 percent from behind the arc, good for fourth in the country. He is also ranked 28th in total threes made this season and 29th in three-point field goals per game with 3.06. Mathis broke the UNM record for most 3-pointers scored in a conference season with 66 and currently ranks fourth all-time in 3-point field goals made in a season with 95.

Mathis leads the Lobos averaging 13.3 points per game and completed the regular season on an 18-game streak scoring in double figures. In addition, he has scored at least one 3-pointer in 18 straight games, the entire span of conference play, to rank ninth in program history for most consecutive games with a three. Not only is he ranked among Lobo greats, this season Mathis leads the league in 3-point field goal percentage (49.5).

 


Jackson saw action in 30 games, starting in 20, in his first and only season as a Lobo and has been an invaluable asset as a graduate transfer. Jackson leads UNM in assists (134), assists per game (4.47) and assist percentage (35.2) while firing over 40 percent from the floor and from 3-point range in conference play. On the season, he has accumulated 42 steals, second-most on the team, and averages 10.3 points per game.

The senior registered a pair of rare point-assist double-doubles on the season and scored a career-high 24 points against San Diego State in Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit, drilling the game-winning shot over the Aztecs with 22 seconds left.

On the season, Jackson has recorded 16 double-digit scoring games, two of which have been over 20 points. He has led the team in scoring four times and has led in assists 16 times.
 


Mathis and Jackson were also named to the third team and honorable mention, respectively, in the 2018 Media Poll, voted on by the Mountain West institutions’ regularly reporting media.

New Mexico heads to the 2018 Mountain West Championships this week, kicking off as the No. 3 seed on Thursday night, March 8, at 9:30 p.m. MT (8:30 p.m. PT). The Lobos clinched the third seed with a victory over Fresno State at home on Saturday in UNM’s first overtime outing of the season. The Lobos will take on the winner of Game 3 of the tournament featuring No. 6 seed Wyoming and No. 11 seed San José State set to take place on Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. MT (4 p.m. PT).
