WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished the first day of the Southwestern Invitational at the North Ranch Country Club in California tied for seventh after the tournament was delayed two hours due to frost. The Lobos shot a 16-over 304 in round one and are currently sitting at an 8-over in round two after play was suspended due to darkness.

The Lobos were paced by junior Sean Carlon, who shot a 5-over 76 in round one and is shooting a 1-under through 11 holes in round two for a 3-over total. Carlon was followed by redshirt freshman Ross Sinclair, who is following up his strong performance in Hawaii with a 3-over 75 in round one and a 4-over through 10 holes in round two for a 7-over total. Sophomore Sam Dickey matched Sinclair’s 7-over total, shooting a 4-over 76 in the first round while currently shooting a 3-over through 12 holes in the second round. Freshman Galven Green and redshirt senior Andre Garcia followed, with Green posting a 6-over 78 in round one and a 2-over through 10 holes in round two for an 8-over total, while Garcia shot a 5-over 77 in round one and a 4-over through 11 holes in round two for a 9-over total.

“I thought that the course was set up very well to challenge every aspect of the game,” said head coach Glen Millican. “It was breezy for most of the day, so scoring was difficult. We played our first stretch poorly each round, but we recovered well in the middle of the rounds.”

No. 22 UCLA leads the 15-team field after Monday’s play, shooting a 3-under 285 in round one along with a 6-over in round two for a 3-over total. Host Pepperdine sit in second, posting a 6-over 294 in round one and a 1-over in round two for a 7-over total. No. 25 Tennessee rounded out the podium positions after day one, shooting a 2-over 290 in the first round with a 12-over in the second round for a 14-over total.

The Southwestern Invitational will resume on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. PT, where round two will be completed followed by the third and final round.
