LAS VEGAS, N.V. — The University of New Mexico Women’s Golf team is starting right where it left off this fall season, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“We’ve been preparing for this spring season since our last tournament in the fall and we’re excited to be back in Vegas,” said head coach Jill Trujillo.
UNM finished in the top-10 at every invitational they competed in this last fall season and they plan on continuing that trend heading into the Rebel Beach Invitational starting Monday, Feb. 26.
Seniors, Ingrid Gutierrez and Alexandra Moisand are gearing up for their last season as Lobos and their leadership and experience has been crucial in the team’s successes so far, this 2017-18 season.
“It’s their last hurrah,” said Trujillo. “Both of our seniors [Gutierrez, Moisand] add a lot to the team’s atmosphere and they have become some incredible leaders.”
New Mexico will be heading to four tournaments this spring season staring with the Rebel Beach Invitational in Las Vegas. In early March, they will be heading to sunny Tucson for the Arizona Wildcat Invitational. The team’s spring break will be one to remember, especially for Gutierrez as they head down South to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational hosted by Iowa. Finally, before they start preparing for the Mountain West Championships, UNM will be in Tempe, Arizona for the PING/ASU Invitational.
UNLV and Long Beach are co-hosting this 54-hole collegiate tournament at par-72 at the Spanish Trail Country Club. This is a course UNM has never played on, but they are ready to take on the 6,355 yards and potentially find their third top-5 finish of the 2017-18 season.
“We are taking the whole roster with us to Vegas,” mentioned Trujillo. “Our coaching staff believes it’s important to take individuals when we can and we’re looking forward to see how these two will do amongst the field [Emma Edwards, Zoey Akagi-Bustin].”
The Lobos will be starting on Monday, Feb. 26 at 8:30 am [PT] with a shotgun start and they will be playing 36 holes.
