SURPRISE, Ariz. — The University of New Mexico baseball team dropped its finale of the College Baseball Classic 15-3 to No. 2 Oregon State on Monday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.
The Lobos (1-3) took an early 1-0 lead on a Daniel Zakosek RBI single in the second inning (the freshman’s first career at-bat), but the Beavers (4-0) took the lead with a five-run third inning and scored at least a run in each of the next four innings to come away with the win.
Freshman Derek Marshall, who entered as a pinch hitter early in the game, went 2-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Lobos with a single in his first two career at-bats. Freshman Richard Ware had the Lobos’ other RBI on a fielder’s choice while sophomore Robby Campillo and freshman Garrett Gouldsmith had the Lobos’ two extra-base hits – each hitting a double.
UNM starter Cody Dye picked up the loss, going 3.2 innings and giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
Nick Madrigal, who went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBI in the Beavers’ 5-2 win over UNM on Friday, went 4-for-4 to lead Oregon State with two RBI and three runs – finishing 7-for-8 against the Lobos this week.
Jordan Britton got the win for the Beavers, going four scoreless innings in relief while giving up three hits and striking out two.
The Lobos return to Albuquerque for their home opener against Central Michigan 6 p.m. Thursday at Santa Ana Star Field – the first of a four-game series.
