UNM Holds 15th After First Round in Hawaii

LIHUE, Hawaii — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team opened play at the Wailua Golf Course in Hawaii, finishing the first round in 15th place out of 20 teams with a team score of 12-over 300.

The Lobos were led by redshirt freshman Ross Sinclair who finished with an even score of 72 in the first round, tied for 26th on the individual leaderboard. Sinclair was followed by redshirt senior Andre Garcia, who was two strokes behind with a 2-over 74. Sophomore Sam Dickey was third for the Lobos with a score or 4-over 76. Freshman Galven Green and junior Sean Carlon rounded out UNM’s field, finishing with a 6-over 78 and a 7-over 79, respectively.

UNM also has two golfers playing as individuals at the event in redshirt senior Ben Tolsma and senior Gustavo Morantes. Tolsma matched Sinclair’s even 72 in round one, finishing tied for 26th on the individual leaderboard. Morantes finished the first round with a 9-over 81.

The Mountain West’s UNLV leads all teams after round one, finishing with an 18-under 270. The Rebels are followed by No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 24 North Carolina and BYU. The Aggies finished round one with a 5-under 283, while the Tar Heels and the Cougars finished tied for third with a 4-under 284 each.
