Lobos Travel to Hawaii for John A. Burns Intercollegiate

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team will travel to Lihu’e, Kaua’i in Hawaii on Thursday, February 15 for the John A. Burns Intercollegiate. The three-day tournament will begin on Thursday and end on Saturday, February 17. The event will consist of 54 holes split into three 18-hole rounds. Every round will start at 8:00 a.m. Hawaii-Aleutian Time with a shotgun start.

The Lobos will be represented by redshirt senior Andre Garcia, junior Sean Carlon, sophomore Sam Dickey, redshirt freshman Ross Sinclair and freshman Galven Green at the tournament. Garcia opened the team’s second half of the season strong, finishing ninth on the individual leaderboard at the Arizona Intercollegiate after posting a final score of 4-over 217.

UNM will also have two golfers competing as individuals, including redshirt senior Ben Tolsma and senior Gustavo Morantes. Both Tolsma and Morantes competed as individuals at the Arizona Medalist Intercollegiate at the end of January. The two Lobos finished in the top 15 of the tournament, with Tolsma finishing tied for 10th with a final score of 6-over 222 and Morantes finishing tied for 14th with a score of 8-over 224.

The tournament’s 20-team field is headlined by No. 3 ranked Texas A&M along with No. 24 North Carolina and BYU, who received votes from the NCAA. The event will also host two Mountain West teams along with New Mexico, including UNLV and Fresno State. The rest of the participating teams include host Hawai’i, Arizona, CSUN, Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, Northern Colorado, Saint Mary’s, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UNC Wilmington, Utah, UTEP, Virginia and Washington State.
