LOVELAND and MINTURN, Colo. — The Lobos got another pair of great races from Vegard Busengdal and Rob Greig, along with Rebecca Fiegl on the women’s side as UNM dropped a bit to fifth place at the Denver Invitational with two events to go.
In Loveland, Busengdal rebounded from a 12th place showing in the giant slalom yesterday to finish fourth in the slalom, scoring 31 points. Rob Greig tied for sixth, and that marked his fourth straight race finishing sixth of better, the best stretch on the season and currently on the squad. Greig scored 26 points, and UNM’s other scorer was Alex Baronous, who finished 20th overall and scored 14 points. That gave UNM 71 in the race, good for second behind Denver’s 103 points.
UNM’s only other finishers were Nick Veth, who was 28th and Isak Klein, who was 33rd. Tyler Theis and Youri Mougel suffered DNFs.
In the women’s race, Rebecca Fiegl finished seventh, scoring 25 points to pace UNM. Alexandra Sjöström was 16th, scoring 16 points, and yesterday’s giant slalom champion Katharine Irwin, was 18th for 14 points. Overall UNM scored 55 to come in fifth in the race. Haley Cutler was 23rd overall as UNM’s fourth skier.
Both Lobo Nordic squads took fifth place in their respective races, paced by Andrea Klementová, who finished 10th overall.
On the women’s side along with Klementová’s top 10 finish, Brenna Egan finished 18th for her third straight top 20 finish, continuing her strong junior campaign. Klementová brough home 21 points nd Egan 16. UNM’s third scorer was Carolyn Luzza, who finished 22nd, scoring 13 points. The Lobos overall scored 50 points to come in fifth in the race.
UNM’s other skier was Hannah Varjus, who finished 28th overall.
The men’s team was racing without top Nordic Sindre Tungesvik, who stayed back in Albuquerque as he was under the weather. However, UNM did get the services of Ricardo Izquierdo-Bernier, who skied his first race of the season.
Erland Nydal was UNM’s top finisher for the Lobos, just missing out on the top 10, coming in 11th. Niklas Rombock was just seconds behind, coming in 13th, and Izquierdo-Bernier finished 16th in his first race of the season. Overall the Lobos posted 56 points to finish fifth in the race.
Tomorrow the Denver Invitational ends with the 5/10K Classic Nordic race and slalom.
