Lobos at Kajikawa Classic

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico softball team kicks off its 2018 season on Friday at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State University. The Lobos will play five games in their opening tournament against No. 3 Oregon, No. 7 Arizona, No. 15 Utah, No. 24 Oklahoma State and Saint Mary’s.

Tournament Headquarters 

The Lobos, led by first-year head coach Paula Congleton, will start the tournament off against No. 15 Utah on Friday at 9:15 a.m. MT before taking on Saint Mary’s at 11:45 a.m.

Saturday, UNM will have just one game, an evening matchup against No. 24 Oklahoma State at 7:30 p.m., before taking on No. 3 Oregon at 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning. The Lobos wrap up competition on Sunday at 2 p.m. against No. 7 Arizona.

UNM is returning 10 letterwinners to this year’s squad including three starters and three pitchers. Leading hitter Chelsea Johnson returns in 2018 after finishing third on the team last year behind graduates Jasmine Cadaos and Shelbie Franc. She also led the team with seven home runs and was second on the team with 28 RBI and was third in on-base percentage at .408.

In the circle, the Lobos return Krissy Fortner who led all Lobo pitchers last season with a 3.60 earned run average in 58.1 innings last season. She also posted the fewest walks with 10.

Following the opening tournament hosted by Arizona State, the Lobos will travel to the UNLV Desert Classic from Feb. 16 – 18.
