Lobos Finish Tied for Eighth After Final Round of Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished tied for eighth along with UTSA after completing rounds two and three on the second day of the Arizona Intercollegiate. The Lobos finished round two, which was delayed yesterday due to darkness, with a 2-over 286 and ended the tournament with a 8-over 292 in round three for a final tally of 39-over 891.

The team was spearheaded by redshirt senior Andre Garcia. Garcia had a quick start to the day, finishing round two with a 3-under 68. He then posted a 2-over 73 in the final round. Garcia finished the tournament with a final score of 4-over 217, placing him ninth on the event’s individual leaderboard.

Sophomore Sam Dickey followed Garcia. Dickey steadily improved throughout the tournament, scoring a 2-over 73 in round two and an even 71 in round three after an 8-over 79 in the opening round. He finished with a final score of 10-over 223, good for a share of 28th on the individual leaderboard.

The Lobos were rounded out by juniors Augustin Holé and Sean Carlon and redshirt freshman Ross Sinclair. All three golfers had their best rounds of the tournament in round two, with Holé and Carlon both scoring 2-over 73’s and Sinclair tallying a 1-over 72. Holé went on to post a 2-over 74 in round three for a 13-over 226 total, and Carlon was just one stroke shy of his teammate, shooting a 3-over 75 in the third round for a 14-over 227 total. Finally, Sinclair finished his day with a 2-over 74, good for a final score of 17-over 230 total. 

Host Arizona went on to win the event after surging to the top of the leaderboard in the final round with a tournament-best 15-under 269 in the round three. The Wildcats finished with a final score of 10-over 862 in three rounds. Arizona was followed by No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 6 Baylor. The Aggies scored under-par in their final two rounds, posting a 5-under 279 in round two and a 6-under 278 in round three for a 12-over 864 total, while the Bears scored a 3-under 281 in round two and a 2-under 282 in round three for a 14-over 866 total.

Play also concluded at the Arizona Medalist Intercollegiate at Randolph Park, with Baylor’s Colin Kober winning the individual tournament after scoring a 3-under 69 in the final round on Tuesday, finishing with a 4-under 212 total. UNM’s top scorer was redshirt senior Ben Tolsma, who finished the tournament tied for 10th place. Tolsma matched Kober’s 3-under 69 in the final round and ended up leaving the tournament with a 6-over 222. Senior Gustavo Morantes was close behind, who also had a solid final round, finishing with an even 72 and an 8-over 224 total, good for a share of 14th place. 

After a rough second round, freshman Galven Green bounced back with the best round of any golfer at the tournament. Green, along with San Diego State’s Christian Banke, shot a 5-under 67 in the final round. He finished with a final score of 10-over 226, tying for 20th place. Redshirt junior Isaac Alderete was the last of the Lobos to compete at the tournament, finishing tied for 35th after a third round score of 2-over 74 brought his final score to a 17-over 233.

The Lobos will be back in action on Thursday, February 15 through Saturday, February 17 when they travel to Lihue, Hawaii for the John Burns Intercollegiate at the Wailua Golf Course.
