Men’s Golf Kicks Off 2018 in Tucson

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team will compete in their first event of the new year when they travel to Tucson, Ariz. for the Arizona Intercollegiate at the Sewailo Golf Club. The tournament will take place on Monday, January 29 through Tuesday, January 30.

The Lobos will be represented by redshirt-senior Andre Garcia and juniors Sean Carlon and Augustin Holé, who have been mainstays in the team’s lineup all season long, as well as sophomore Sam Dickey and redshirt-freshman Ross Sinclair.

The University of Arizona is also hosting an individual event in addition to the Arizona Intercollegiate. The tournament, held at Randolph Park, is comprised of 42 golfers, and there is no team aspect to the event. Four Lobos will play as individuals including redshirt-senior Ben Tolsma, senior Gustavo Morantes, redshirt-junior Isaac Alderete and freshman Galven Green.

The Arizona Intercollegiate’s 18 team field includes multiple high-level teams including No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 6 Baylor and No. 14 California, with other receiving votes including BYU and Santa Clara. Along with UNM, the rest of the field is made up of host Arizona, Denver, Iowa State, Louisiana Tech, LMU, New Mexico State, San Diego State, South Dakota State, St. Mary’s, UTEP, UTSA and Washington. The Tucson tournament is the first of seven events leading up the Mountain West Championships on Friday, April 20. The Lobos will also compete in tournaments hosted by Hawaii, Pepperdine, San Diego State, UTSA, Augusta University and Texas A&M. 

The Mountain West Championships will be held in Bremerton, Wash. at the Golf Mountain Golf Club, lasting three days until Sunday, April 22. The NCAA Regional will follow on Monday, May 14 through Wednesday, May 16. Finally, postseason play will conclude with the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla. at the Karsten Creek Golf Club on Friday, May 25 through Wednesday, May 30.
