Haught Named Assistant Coach for UNM Volleyball
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico volleyball program and 12th-year Lobo head coach Jeff Nelson have the announced the addition of Troy Haught as an assistant coach for the indoor volleyball team.
Haught comes to New Mexico after a three-year stint as head coach at Notre Dame College, an NCAA Division II school in South Euclid, Ohio, where he led the Falcons to a Mountain East Conference Tournament berth in 2016.
“I am very excited to have Troy join our staff,” Nelson said. “He brings solid experience as a head coach at two Division II programs where he improved the level of each. Troy is experienced in recruiting and the broad spectrum of things we do in our program from athlete development, fundraising, recruiting and beyond.”
Haught coached Notre Dame College to a 16-win season in 2016, a 12-win improvement over the Falcon’s 2015 record and the most wins the program had compiled since the 2009 campaign. That season, NDC also made its first appearance in the MEC tournament.
Additionally, Falcon Melissa Maczuzak was in 2016 and 2017 named to both the All-MEC Second Team and to the All-Atlantic Region Second Team by D2CCA. She was the first athlete in the program’s Division II era to be named to an All-Region team.
Ali Kaeberlein was also named All-MEC honorable mention and to the MEC All-Freshman Team in 2016, and was selected as CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District II in 2017, the first athlete in program history to earn the honor.
Prior to his time at Notre Dame College, Haught was the head volleyball coach at Urbana University for three seasons. Under Haught, Urbana had its best conference start in a decade and a Mountain East Conference Freshman of the Year.
Despite coaching without full scholarships at both Notre Dame College and Urbana University, Haught improved both programs during his time at each.
“His passion for the game is great and he will bring great energy to the court,” Nelson said.
Haught has also made stops at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School, Oberlin College, Minerva High School and Glen Oak High School.
He has an extensive background coaching Junior Olympic Volleyball at the regional and national levels for Elite Sports. Two of Haught’s teams advanced all the way to the AAU Nationals. In five seasons at the high school level, he compiled a 71-48 record.
Haught received his undergraduate degree from Kent State University in 2009. As a player, Haught competed at the national club level in high school. He still plays competitive indoor and men’s sand volleyball.
Haught will join the Lobos during the team’s training sessions at the end of the week.
