ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — One night into the season, one new school record.
The University of New Mexico track & field team earned a number of solid marks during Friday’s action of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational as it closed out the first day of its season-opening meet at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Behind Mark Haywood’s new school record in the 600-meter run and other strong results across the board, the Lobos captured some key experience against some solid competition to kick off the two-day meet.
On the men’s side, Haywood clocked a time of 1 minute, 19.02 seconds in the 600, placing fifth overall and breaking the 10-year-old school record of 1:19.18 set by Olympian Jarrin Solomon.

Haywood now owns two of the top four 600-meter performances in UNM history.
However, he wasn’t the only Lobo producing significant results on the opening day of the 2018 season.
In the men’s 200, Carlos Salcido ran to the second-fastest time in New Mexico history, registering a time of 21.40. Teammate Jay Griffin also logged a quick time, running 21.55 for sixth in UNM’s annals.
The duo placed second and sixth, respectively, out of 65 total finishers.
Ian Crowe-Wright and Taylor Potter also notched solid marks in the men’s 3000, with Crowe-Wright placing second in 8:31.12 and Potter taking third in 8:35.32.
Additionally, Tanner Battikha leaped to sixth place in a star-studded long jump, soaring 23 feet, 11 inches (just off his personal record indoors), and Daniel Lam tied for eighth in the pole vault with a mark of 15-10.
On the women’s side, Larimar Rodriguez placed fifth in the 600 with a time of 1:37.13, while freshman Ada’ora Chigbo nabbed fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 5-3 ¼.
The Lobos return to the Albuquerque Convention Center Saturday for the second day of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational. The meet resumes at 9:30 a.m. with the women’s shot put, with action on the track starting at 10:15 a.m. with the opening round of the women’s 60 hurdles.
