ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is set to return home to host the San José State Spartans on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. in Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit.

The Lobos (6-10, 1-2 MW) are coming off of a disappointing showing at (RV) Boise State while SJSU (3-11, 0-3 MW) enters the contest having displayed a strong performance at UNLV Wednesday. The Spartans executed a 10-point comeback in the final 4:50 of regulation to force overtime, ultimately falling to the Rebels 82-76.

Outstanding performers for the Lobos thus far in the season include senior Joe Furstinger, who has scored 74 points over the past five games compared to 59 in the 11 before that. He finished just four rebounds shy of his fifth straight double-double at Boise State Wednesday.

Junior Anthony Mathis is also having a breakout season. In his first two with the Lobos, Mathis averaged just 2.3 and 2.9 points per game, respectively. This season, Mathis has registered 10 double-digit scoring games and is ranked third in the Mountain West in 3-point field goal percentage (47.1).

Leading SJSU on the season is junior Ryan Welage who is averaging 18.5 points per game. In conference play, the Spartans have three players averaging in double figures including Welage (20.3), freshman Noah Baumann (11.7) and junior Jaycee Hillsman (10.0).

SERIES HISTORY
The Lobos lead the series over the Spartans 11-1 dating back to Dec. 21, 1961. UNM’s only loss came last season at home on Feb. 4, 78-68. Prior to that meeting, the Lobos were on a 10-0 streak with just one overtime match, an 82-81 final on Jan. 13. 1999.

Home vs away breakdown includes a 7-1 record in Albuquerque, 6-1 in The Pit, and 3-0 on the road in San José. The Lobos are also 1-0 in neutral matchups.

THE COACHES
UNM head coach Paul Weir enters the game 6-10 in his first season at the helm of the Lobos, 34-16 in his career. The Spartans are coached by Jean Prioleau who is 3-11 in his first season and career.
