ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Back in 2010, Bob Davie was calling games for ESPN and Chip Kelly was on the sidelines of the Oregon Ducks, watching his team put up a 72-0 win over the New Mexico Lobos.

My have times changed.

Fast forward to 2017 and today’s Spring Practice, and there is Bob Davie, the head coach of the New Mexico Lobos orchestrating Spring practice number six with precision, crispness and a workman-like attitude.  And there is Chip Kelly, who left Oregon after going 46-7 to try his hand at the NFL coaching with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, recording a quarterback pitch drill on his phone.

My oh my have times changed.

Kelly, who has a long relationship with Davie, was in town to watch the Lobos in action, take in some film, and talk with the team.  In watching practice, Kelly said. “You can tell why they had the record that they had last year and the success that they had going to a bowl game.  (Coach Davie) has done a hell of a job.  It was a really, really impressive practice today.”

“I’m really excited he’s here,” said Davie.  “I’m really happy he’s taken the time to talk to our team and our coaches.  I think it’s good for him and good for us both.”

Kelly oversaw a 26-period practice, usually to straying too far from the quarterback and the offensive areas.  He took particular note of the many facets of UNM’s pistol option.  “I think everybody in college and professional knows what New Mexico is doing,” said Kelly.  “I’m really really impressed with how he is running this program right now.”
