ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame Banquet, held on Sunday night at the Albuquerque Convention Center, had a decidedly Lobo feel to it. Several fomer Lobos were inducted, including Danny Granger, Marv Levy and Adam Kedge, but woven throughout the evening was Lobo Football. Dakota Cox, Bob Davie and the team were all honored at the banquet.
Dakota Cox was the Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year, and Bob Davie was the Collegiate Coach of the Year. The team, which went 9-4 and won both the Mountain Division and the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, was named the Collegiate Team of the Year. Additionally, the Gildan New Mexico Bowl was the Event of the Year, and Courtney Frerichs of UNM Track and Field and Cross Country was the Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year.
Cox and Coach Davie both spoke after receiving their awards, Dakota giving thanks to him teammates and the fans, and wishing he could put that Lobo uniform on one more time. Coach Davie thanked the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame but was quick to note, “Coaches have never won a game, it’s all about these players,” he said, pointing to the table in the back. He also stated that 9-4 is great, but it’s not where he wasn’t it to be.
Daniel Henry spoke on behalf of the team as they accepted to Team of the Year award. Daniel, who is from California, noted that although he is not from Albuquerque, “New Mexico is my second home, and I wish that I could have played longer here.”
