COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of New Mexico men’s basketball duo of Elijah Brown and Tim Williams have each been honored by the league coaches in the 2017 All-Mountain West selections, announced Tuesday morning. Brown was selected as All-MW Second Team, while Williams was named to the All-MW Third Team.
Brown led the Lobos this season in scoring at 18.9 points per game and in conference action at 20.7 points per game. Both of those numbers are second in the Mountain West.
With his 15 free throws made against San Diego State Saturday, Brown broke the Mountain West junior free throw record with 125 made this season. Brown also holds the sophomore record, making 137 free throws in MW play last season.
Brown is among the top free throw shooters in the country. He ranks 15th in the nation in free throw attempts at 218, which is first in the league. He also ranks ninth in the country in free throws made at 181, which also leads the Mountain West.
Williams put together 16.9 points per game and led the team with 7.1 rebounds per game in his 11 games played in conference action. He missed seven the Lobos’ 18 league games due to a stress reaction in his left foot. Williams returned to the court Saturday against San Diego State and finished with 10 points in 31 minutes of play. He also brought down six rebounds.
In his 11 conference games, Williams scored in double digits in all of those games. He shot 53.8 percent from the field. He finished with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. This season he has finished two games with 30 or more points and three games with 20 or more points. He has four double-doubles on the year and has led the team in scoring 10 times.
The Lobos will look for their fourth Mountain West Tournament Championship in six years this week as they head to Las Vegas, Nevada Tuesday. They will face Fresno State Thursday at 2:30 p.m. PT/3:30 p.m. MT. The game will air on CBS Sports (Comcast 274/838 HD, DISH 158, DirecTV 221).
