GREENWOOD, IND. — Junior Cherise Beynon of The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team has been named College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 7 First Team for her outstanding performance both on the court and in the classroom, CoSIDA announced Thursday.
As a standout on the court for UNM, Beynon boasts a 4.07 grade point average in business administration/entrepreneurship. The honor marks Beynon’s first Academic All-District honor and just the fifth in program history. With her selection as an All-District First Team honoree, Beynon will now be entered into the running for CoSIDA Academic All-American status.
To be eligible for the CoSIDA All-District teams, candidates must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average, have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games and must have completed at least one full calendar year at their current institution.
Beynon’s recognition comes less than 24 hours after registering the Lobos’ first triple-double since 1979 on Wednesday. After skirting the milestone a few times this year, Beynon racked up 20 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists against Mountain West opponent Air Force at home.
This season has been a remarkable one for Beynon as she became just the 15th player in program history to reach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds, which she completed in the same game on Jan. 28 against Nevada, also at home in WisePies Arena – The Pit. She currently ranks 13th in Lobo history in career points with 1,083, ninth in career assists with 333 and sixth in steals with 169.
Beynon and the rest of the Lobos get the weekend off before returning to action on the road at Boise State on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.
