SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team continued their winning streak on Saturday afternoon after sweeping the Big 10 Nebraska Cornhuskers 4-0 in a neutral site matchup at the University of Utah.
The Lobos started off doubles play very strong. The doubles pair of Lawrence Perrin and Ricky Hernandez-Tong defeated Toby Boyer and Dylan Bednarczyk of Nebraska 6-3. Following Perrin and Hernandez-Tong, Dominic West and Bart Van Leijsen defeated Tomislav Antoljak and David Samardzija of Nebraska 6-2 at the No. 2 position, giving the team the doubles point advantage over the Huskers.
Hernandez-Tong clinched the first win in singles play after defeating Bednarczyk 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 position. It wasn’t long until Perrin defeated Nebraska’s Chris Dean 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 5 position that would give the Lobos the 3-0 lead. To close out the match, West defeated Samardzija 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 position that gave the Lobos the 4-0 win over Nebraska.
“That’s a good win against a Big 10 team at a neutral site,” head coach Ben Dunbar said. “We played well. We were clinical and focused. We are looking forward to tomorrow and a great match against Utah.”
The Lobos (3-5) will play their last match of the weekend against the Utah Utes tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. MT at the Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes (9-1) defeated the Huskers 7-0 yesterday.
