ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming team competed in the intrasquad Cherry vs. Silver Invite on Saturday morning, with Team Cherry gaining victory over Team Silver with a final score of 375-340.

The goal of the meet was to create a fun experience for the team in a competitive environment. The mood was set early, as all the swimmers wore holiday sweaters before the event started.

The Lobos competed in nine events on the day, most of which were unconventional compared to a typical meet. The events included the 300-yard medley relay, the 300-yard individual medley, the 150-yard breaststroke, the 150-yard freestyle, the 150-yard backstroke, the 150-yard butterfly, the 100-yard individual medley, the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle relay. Team Cherry won six of the nine events, while Team Silver won three.

Along with the untraditional distances, other wrinkles were added into the races. Junior Adriana Palomino swam 350 yards in the 300-yard individual medley and the swimmers were able to choose the order of their different swims in the 200-yard individual. In addition, head swimming coach Dorsey Tierney-Walker offered double points for the winner of the final event, the 500-yard freestyle relay, to increase the stakes as Team Cherry led by 29 points before the relay.

The Cherry vs. Silver Invite kicked off the holiday training season for the Lobos, as the team will not compete again until Monday, January 8, 2018, when it travels to San Diego, California, to compete in a quad-meet against San Diego State, Fresno State and Colorado State.
