Corey Bojorquez Named to Ray Guy Award Semifinal List
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Corey Bojorquez, who is having a record-breaking season for The University of New Mexico Lobos, has been named one of 10 finalists for the Ray Guy Award, presented by the Augusta Sports Council. The three finalists for the award will be announced on Tuesday, November 21.
Joining the left-footer on the Ray Guy Semifinal list is Drue Chrisman of Ohio State, Joseph Davidson of Bowling Green State, Michael Dickson of Texas, Corey Fatony of Missouri, Cody Grace of Arkansas State, Cameron Nizialek of Georgia, Yannis Routsas of UTSA, JK Scott of Alabama and Mitch Wishnowsky of Utah. Wishnowsky was the 2016 Ray Guy Award winner.
This season Bojorquez has been one of the nation’s top punters, as he is third in average with a 47.3 mark. That would easily break the UNM single-season record. Bojorquez has punted 54 times this season, and he has combined both power and accuracy as he has 25 punts of 50 or more yards and 25 punts downed inside the 20-yard line.
Bojorquez also has unleashed four 70-yard punts this season, including a season-long 78-yarder against Colorado State. Bojorquez’ four 70-yarders this season is a school record, as is his five career 70-yarders.
The Lobos are also 12th nationally in net punting, only getting hurt by a 90-yard return by Texas A&M in which a flag was thrown and then inexplicably picked up. Other than that return, opponents have just 12 return yards this season. He also is believed to be the first ordained minister to make the Ray Guy Award semifinal list.
No Lobo punter has ever been a finalist for the award. The three finalists will head to Atlanta for the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 7. This year, the fans will have a hand in the vote as well, as the fans will have the equivalent of one national vote for the award. Fans can go to rayguyaward.com and vote.
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team’s success.
