COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — University of New Mexico senior Cherise Beynon’s near triple-double effort in the Lobo women’s basketball’s season-opening win over Western Michigan earned her Mountain West Player of the Week honors the conference announced Monday.

The Las Vegas, Nevada, native paced the Lobos with 24 points and nine assists to go along with eight rebounds in UNM’s 88-76 victory over the Broncos – the most points scored by the Lobos since 2009 and a contest they never trailed in.

Beynon finished 8-for-16 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the game. She also drained a 3-pointer, giving her 133 in her career – one shy of sixth place on the UNM all-time list.

While Beynon came up just short of the triple-double, she does have two to her name – both coming last year. She was the first Lobo player to have a triple-double since 1979.

Beynon, who was named the MW Preseason Player of the Year, has reached double figures in scoring in 25 of her last 28 games and has at least four assists in 13 consecutive games.

It’s the first MW Player of the Week honor for Beynon and the second for the Lobos since the beginning of the 2015-16 season (Richelle van der Keijl won it for the week of Dec. 12, 2016).
