The finish line is in sight. The Lobos just need one final kick to get them across.

The University of New Mexico volleyball team continues its hectic final week of the season as it returns to Albuquerque to cap its 2017 home schedule, hosting UTEP on Sunday before taking on UNLV for Senior Night on Monday.

In the midst of a season-closing stretch of five matches in seven days, the Lobos (14-15 overall, 6-10 Mountain West) are looking to finish their home campaign on a high note when they play UTEP (6-21 overall) in a non-conference tilt and Mountain West foe UNLV (8-20, 4-11).

The match against UNLV is the team’s Senior Night, as UNM will honor its lone senior, Ashley Kelsey prior to first serve at 7 p.m. MT.

However, before the Lobos can pay their regards to one of the best liberos in program history, they’ll need to first get their feet under them.

The UTEP and UNLV matches are not only part of a busy final week of the season, but part of three matches in three days. On Saturday, New Mexico fell to San Diego State in San Diego. This coming Wednesday, UNM returns to the road to play Air Force in its season finale.

With rebounding and finishing strongly on the collective minds of the Lobos, they’ll need to regroup in Johnson Center.

Kelsey, as she’s done all year, can provide that leadership needed to close out the season positively.

On the cusp of not only reaching 1,500 career digs but also third all-time in program history in digs, Kelsey has been instrumental in guiding New Mexico’s freshman-heavy roster.

With nine freshman on the roster and many seeing significant playing time, Kelsey has served as the team leader during her final season in the cherry and silver.

Getting strong production out of fellow upperclassmen Victoria Spragg and Mariessa Carrasco and sophomore team captain Lauren Twitty will also be key as UNM contends with its final two home opponents.

UTEP, out of Conference USA, is just 6-21 this season, with one of those losses coming to UNM in El Paso in September. UNLV, an NCAA Tournament team from last year, is 8-20 and has lost five straight after going 4-2 to open October.
