CoSIDA RELEASE
ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT WOMEN’S TEAMS
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — University of New Mexico women’s soccer senior Alexa Cabrales was selected to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) All-District 7 First Team when the teams were released Thursday afternoon.
Cabrales owns a 3.98 GPA in business administration while starting 20 of the Lobos’ 22 games this season at outside back, playing a key role in helping the Lobos go 12-8-2 (the most wins for the program since 2011), pick up the No. 4 seed in the Mountain West Tournament and advance to the tournament championship game.
“Alexa holds herself to an incredibly high standard both on the field and in the classroom,” UNM coach Heather Dyche said. “She’s been an incredible role model for our program and has helped set our academic standards. We are super proud of her!”
Since Cabrales was selected to the first team, she’ll be put on the ballot for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team – which will be announced in December.
The Mission Viejo, California, native finished her career playing in 69 games for the Lobos and racking up seven assists from the outside back position.
She’s the first player to earn academic all-district first-team honors since Cassie Ulrich in 2015 and the first non-goalkeeper to earn first-team honors since 2013 (Liz Nare and Brianna Webster).
Cabrales has a chance to become the first UNM women’s soccer player to win CoSIDA Academic All-America honors since Brooke Ellison in 2013 and just the fourth ever.
