ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team will head to Flagstaff, Arizona on Saturday, October 28 to take on Northern Arizona University in a dual meet starting at 12 p.m. MT.
The Lobos will look to take advantage of their current momentum, as they hope to extend their winning streak to four. UNM beat Air Force and Nebraska Omaha in a double-dual meet two weeks ago before topping Wyoming in a dual meet last week.
The team has also earned strong performances from junior diver Allyson Concepcion and junior swimmer Adriana Palomino, who was named Mountain West Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday for her performances between October 13 and October 21.
The meet will be the first competition for the Lumberjacks this season. NAU ended last season with a 4-8 record in dual meets including a 140.5-156.5 loss to UNM and a fourth straight WAC Championship. The Lumberjacks also had three of their current divers competing in the NCAA Zone last season including juniors Raquel Gonzales, Christina Torrente and Tatiana Kurach. Kurach was named WAC Diver of the Year and competed in the NCAA Championships.
“We’re looking forward to a great meet,” said head diving coach Julie Weddle. “I love competing against NAU. I have the upmost respect for diving coach Nikki Huffman. We share similar beliefs, yet the things we don’t agree on, we respect each other’s view. Our teams train well together, especially when we train tower there. NAU is very supportive and makes it a bit easier for my girls to get up on tower since we don’t have one at home. We have to compete it at conference, so this is a great way to get a tower practice in. The divers will leave a day before swimmers so we can get a practice in before the meet.”
