DALLAS, Texas — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team got off to their best start of the season on Monday as the team sits tied for fourth place after two rounds at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas, Texas.
The Lobos got off to a quick start in round one, finishing with a 10-under 274 as a team in the first frame. After a rocky beginning to the second round, the team rounded out their solid day with a 3-over 287 in round two for a 7-under 561 total.
UNM finished day one with three of its five golfers in the tournament’s top 25, including redshirt senior Andre Garcia, who was tied for eighth, and juniors Augustin Holé and Sean Carlon, who finished tied for fourth and tied for 18th, respectively. Holé led the charge, as he finished round one with a 5-under 66 and round two with an even 71 for a 5-under 137 total. Garcia continued his great play on the season, posting a 3-under 68 in the first round and a 1-under 70 in the second round for a 4-under 138 total, while Carlon was consistent throughout the day with 1-under 70’s in both of his rounds, finishing with a 2-under 140 total.
The Lobos were also represented by redshirt freshman Ross Sinclair and freshman Galven Green. Sinclair scored a 1-under 70 in his first round and a 9-over 80 in his second, good for an 8-over 150 total, while Green scored a 4-over 75 in round one and a 5-over 76 in round two for a 9-over 151 total.
“Overall, it was a good day for us. We did two things very well. First, this morning we got things going and were able to finish it off and post a good number,” said head coach Glen Millican. “Second, when the afternoon round was not going well, our guys did an excellent job of staying patient and giving us a chance to make up some ground on our last eight holes. I think we had an 11-over for the second round at one point, but brought it back to 3-over. Their ability to hang in there and finish well was impressive and kept us in a good position heading into the final round.”
Host-team Baylor led the pack after the first day, with a 12-under 272 in round one and an 11-under 274 in round two for a commanding 22-under 546 total. The next closest team was Arkansas, finishing with a 1-under 283 and an 8-under 276 in its first two rounds for a 9-under 559 total, followed by Liberty, scoring a 2-under 282 and a 6-under 278 for an 8-under 560 total.
All teams will be back in action Tuesday morning, when one final round will be played with tee times set to begin at 7:15 a.m. MT starting at holes 1 and 10. To follow the tournament via live stats, click here.
