COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico women’s cross country team claimed the top spot in the Mountain West Midseason Women’s Cross Country Coaches’ poll, as voted by the league’s coaches in the women’s preseason coaches’ poll
The Lobo men placed fifth place in the men’s poll, which the MW released in conjunction with the women’s poll on Thursday.
The New Mexico women have won nine straight MW cross country titles, while the men have won six of the last eight men’s championships.
The No. 3 New Mexico women, who have placed top-10 at the NCAA Championships each of the last seven years for the nation’s longest active streak, maintain their spot atop the league’s rankings with 10 first-place votes and 100 total points. The women were also the preseason No. 1 pick, as selected August 31.
The No. 13 Boise State women came in second in the poll with the other first-place vote and 88 points, with No. 19 Utah State third with 70 points. Colorado State (fourth place, 69 points), Air Force (fifth, 63), Nevada (sixth, 59), Wyoming (seventh, 55), San José State (eighth, 54), San Diego State (ninth, 45), Fresno State (10th, 41) and UNLV (11th, 40) round out the poll.
In the men’s poll, the Lobos rank fifth with 26 points, falling out of the tie for fourth they logged in the preseason poll.
No. 11 Colorado State leads the poll with seven first-place votes and 49 points, followed by No. 15 Boise State (second place, 43 points/1 first-place vote), No. 23 Air Force (third, 36) and No. 27 Utah State (fourth, 29). Wyoming (sixth, 17), San José State (seventh, 13) and Fresno State (eighth, 9) were the final three teams ranked in the eight-team poll.
Both Lobo squads will aim for the conference title at the 2017 MW Cross Country Championships at home as they host the meet at the UNM North Golf Course on Friday, October 27.
But up next for the Lobos is the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational next Friday in Madison, Wisconsin.
