ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball season is officially underway as head coach Paul Weir hosted the opening press conference on Wednesday prior to the Lobos’ first official practice of 2017-18.
Wednesday’s practice went almost two hours in the Rudy Davalos Gymnasium and served as the media’s first real look at the Lobos under the direction of first-year head coach Weir.
“We have started our new training program and today was an excellent start,” Weir said. “Though we are still hammering in our processes and culture, we are excited about moving into the execution of our system. The next six weeks are about moving the needle as much as humanly possible and day one was a step in that direction.”
The first practice of the season could only be classified as high-energy and featured exciting drills that focused on both offense and defense. The Lobos worked on box-out drills, transition offense, transition defense, making hustle plays, game situations and more.
NCAA rules state that teams are allowed practice 42 days prior to the first official game. UNM will work over the next month to get ready for the squad’s season opener at home in Dreamstyle Arena. The Lobos will open regular-season play on Saturday, Nov. 11 against Northern New Mexico in a 7 p.m. matchup.
