ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —  The 63rd annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate came to a close on Saturday as the University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished tied for sixth place after two days at the UNM Championship South Course.

Redshirt-senior Andre Garcia and junior Sean Carlon followed, with Garcia posting a 2-under 70 in round three, the lowest round for a Lobo over both days, for a 4-over 220 total. Carlon scored a 2-over 74 in round three for a 6-over 222 total. Redshirt-freshman Ross Sinclair scored a 2-over 74 in round three and finished with an 8-over 224 total while freshman Galven Green posted a 3-over 75 in the final round for a 9-over 225 total.

In addition, UNM players occupied four of the top-five individual spots, including sophomore Sam Dickey, redshirt-junior Isaac Alderete, senior Gustavo Morantes and redshirt-senior Ben Tolsma. Dickey finished with an even 72 in round three, which was the the best round three score by a UNM individual, and finished the tournament with a 6-over 222. In round three, Alderete posted a 3-over 75 (7-over, 223 total), Morantes scored a 2-over 74 (8-over, 224 total) and Tolsma had a 6-over 78 (11-over, 227 total). Redshirt-sophomore Tiger Lee ended the tournament with a 7-over 79 in round three, good for an 18-over 234 total.

“Today was a pretty good round for us. It was a solid finish to the event with a 4-over,” said head coach Glen Millican. “We were better in Colorado, but it is a step in the right direction for us. We needed to play better in round one when the conditions were better in order to compete with BYU. We’re not where we want to be, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.”

The Tucker was bookended by BYU storming into first place late, scoring a 1-under 287 in the third round to win the tournament with a 9-over 873. BYU was followed by Washington, posting an 8-over 296 in round three for a 13-over 877 total. Arizona finished in third with a 1-over 289 in round three and a 14-over 878 total led by top individual golfer George Cunningham, who finished with an 8-under 208 total, scoring under par in all three rounds.

UNM’s next tournament is hosted by Denver University. The Lobos will play the Paintbrush Invitational at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo. on Monday, October 9 through Tuesday, October 10.
