ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Lobo men’s golf team opened play on their only home tournament of the season on Friday as they hosted the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the UNM Championship South Course. The 17 teams played two continuous rounds on day one, both beginning with shotgun starts. The tournament will conclude on Saturday with one final round teeing off at 7:45 a.m. MT with a shotgun start.
UNM finished the day tied for sixth place, scoring a 9-over 297 in the first round and a 7-over 295 in the second round (16-over 592 total). The Lobos were led by junior Augustin Holé, who posted a 1-over 145 total, with a 2-over 74 in round one and a team-best 1-under 71 in round two. Holé was followed by junior Sean Carlon (75 in round one, 73 in round two, 4-over 148 total) and redshirt senior Andre Garcia (74 in round one, 76 in round two, 6-over 150 total). UNM was also represented by redshirt freshman Ross Sinclair, who finished round one with a 2-over 74 and round two with a 4-over 76 in his first appearance as a Lobo, and freshman Galven Green, who scored a 3-over 75 in round one and the same score in round two. Both Sinclair and Green finished with a total of 6-over 150.
UNM also had five team members competing as individuals, with redshirt junior Isaac Alderete leading the scoring for individual play. Alderete finished round one with a 4-over 76 and had a strong round two with an even 72 (4-over 148 total). Redshirt senior Ben Tolsma, senior Gustavo Morantes and sophomore Sam Dickey also finished in the top-five of individual scoring, with Tolsma scoring a 4-over 76 and a 1-over 73 in rounds one and two respectively (5-over 149 total). In addition, Morantes posted a 4-over 76 in round one and a 2-over 74 in round two (6-over 150 total), while Dickey finished with a 5-over 77 in round one and a 1-over 73 in round two (6-over 150 total). Redshirt sophomore Tiger Lee began his UNM career with a 7-over 79 in round one and 4-over 76 in round two (11-over 155 total).
“It was good for Tiger to get started as a Lobo. He had a rough stretch on the front-nine this afternoon, but it happens and the weather got tough,” said head coach Glen Millican. “Ross played well today, too. He made a few mistakes, a couple from not playing this event before and a couple from some bad shots at the wrong time. But overall, the team finished both rounds strong and we put ourselves in a position to succeed tomorrow.”
The top three after day one included UNLV, Washington and BYU, with UNLV remaining on top of the leaderboard since the end of round one with a 6-under 282 in round one and a 5-over 293 in round two (1-under 575 total). Washington, sitting in second place, scored a 6-over 294 in round one and finished strong with a 1-under 287 (5-over 581 total). BYU rounded out the top-three with a 4-under 284 in round one and a 14-over 302 in round two (10-over 586 total).
