ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Lobo men’s golf team will begin their only home tournament of the season on Friday as they host the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. The tournament will be played at the UNM Championship South Course in Albuquerque on Friday, September 22 through Saturday, September 23. To follow the event via live stats, click HERE.
The field consists of 17 teams, including UNLV, the 12-ranked team in the Golf Coaches Association of America’s preseason poll. Additionally, Washington, San Diego State, Colorado and BYU are receiving votes.
The Tucker will consist of three rounds, with two on Friday and one on Saturday. Friday’s rounds will begin with a shotgun start and will be continuous, while the final round’s pairings will be based on the first day’s results and will also begin with a shotgun start. The teams will begin play at 7:45 A.M. MT on both days.
The Lobos will look to build off of their solid final round on Tuesday at the Ram Masters Invitational, as they improved five spots on the final day of the tournament. UNM will be represented this weekend by redshirt senior Andre Garcia, juniors Sean Carlon and Augustin Holé, redshirt freshman Ross Sinclair (his first appearance as a Lobo) and freshman Galven Green.
The Lobos will also have five players competing as individuals in the event including redshirt senior Ben Tolsma, senior Gustavo Morantes, redshirt junior Isaac Alderete, redshirt sophomore Tiger Lee (who is also making his first appearance for UNM) and sophomore Sam Dickey.
“We played well in our final round on Tuesday, and we want to build on that success. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was good, solid golf for us,” head coach Glen Millican said. “We just need to go out and take care of business. The forecast is windy. We just have to stay focused and try to keep the ball in position. In the end, we just want to go out and have fun on our home course.”
The Lobos will be missing former UNM men’s golf coach Dick McGuire during the tournament.
“This is the 63rd annual Tucker, starting in 1955, and it will be the first one without Coach McGuire either coaching or watching,” Millican said. “We’ll definitely miss him during the tournament. We want to build on his legacy and build on the golf program he started 62 years ago.”
McGuire passed away from metastatic cancer on June 23, 2017 at the age of 90. To read more about the late Coach McGuire, click here.
