CULVER CITY, CALIF. — Junior Aaron Herrera of the University of New Mexico men’s soccer team was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week on Tuesday for his outstanding performance in the Grange and Ashwill Invitational this past weekend.
Herrera was named 2017 Grange and Ashwill Invitational Tournament MVP this week after leading the Lobos to the tournament champion title. Herrera played all 180 minutes and helped anchor a defensive line that allowed just two goals on the week while posting four points on a pair of assists and a goal.
The defender racked up two points against CSUN on Friday, tallying assists on both of UNM’s goals in the match including the gamewinner. On Sunday, Herrera followed up his two-assist performance with the game-winning goal against UC Irvine. The goal also marked his first of the season.
So far this season, Herrera has five points on one goal and three assists. He is 6-for-12 in shots on goal for a .500 shot on goal percentage.
The Lobos are set to return to action in their Conference USA opener against No. 13 Kentucky at the UNM Soccer Complex on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.
