Lobo Football Announces 2017 Captains

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Lamar Jordan, Jake Rothschiller, Alex Hart and Blaise Fountain have been named captains for the 2017 season, announced head football coach Bob Davie.  The announcement was first made to the team at their late evening team meeting.

The four captains certainly showcase a varied history, each with a unique story to tell that makes them leaders among their peers.  In fact, it was their peers that voted for them to serve as captains of the 2017 team.

For Lamar Jordan, he becomes the second three-time captain in the history of the program, but the second in two seasons, following on the heels of Dakota Cox.  Jordan, who is among the all-time UNM leaders in rushing yards, quarterback wins and quarterback rating, is the first offensive player in school history to be named captain three times.

“I look at it as being a big brother,” said Jordan.  “I have a lot of little brothers I have to look after … it’s a blessing in my eyes.”

The other captain from the offensive side is Blaise Fountain, a senior and the only JC transfer among the four captains.  Fountain, who was named to the preseason Rimington Watch list, played every meaningful snap at center in 2017, and has a tremendous responsibility on the line, making many of the line calls.  Fountain’s work ethic earned him immediate respect on the team, despite his quiet nature.

“You don’t always have to be the most vocal guy,” said Fountain.  “A lot of it is through your actions.  Guys look up to you through your hard work.

Bob Davie knows the importance of walk-ons, a point made clear when he took over in 2012, instituting the New Mexico Man.  Now, a former walk-on is a captain.  Jake Rothschiller, who came to UNM as a walk-on, earned a starting position, earned a scholarship, and is now a captain as a senior.  It’s a fitting career capper for the hard-working Rothschiller, who stands 5-8, but plays bigger than life.

“Being a leader, to me, is doing everything right, on and off the field.  Leading by example is huge, and leading by example is hard,” said Rothschiller.

The fourth captain also is on the defensive side is Alex Hart, who not only is replacing four-year starter Dakota Cox on the field, but now as a captain.  The only one of the four captains who hasn’t utilized his redshirt season, Hart, a former high school wrestler, understands his expanded role.

“It’s a lot of responsibility to be a captain,” said Hart.  “I just want to be an example, help as best I can for this team to be as successful as possible.”

In addition to the four captains, six other players joined them in being named to the 2017 Leadership Council.  The other players are Daryl Chestnut, Jason Sanders, Richard McQuarley, Avery Jordan, Aaron Jenkins and Garrett Hughes.  The Leadership Council represents the entire team in working with the coaching staff on a variety of things from which uniforms and helmets the team will wear each week to team accountability to bringing up issues to the coaching staff.
