Lobos Kick Off Lobo Leadership Academy

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico Athletic Department is pleased to announce the inaugural class for the Lobo Leadership Academy. Thirty UNM student-athletes have been selected by their coaches to further develop the values, skills and confidence to be effective leaders on the playing field, in the classroom and in the community.

The Lobo Leadership Academy will focus on discussing the meaning of leadership, how to lead in adverse situations, how to establish a winning culture and how to build relationships with those you lead. The inaugural participants in this initiative will meet several times throughout the 2017-18 school year to work on developing these skills.

“I am extremely excited to launch the Lobo Leadership Academy,” said Amy Beggin, former UNM women’s basketball player and current director of compliance for the UNM Athletic Department. Beggin will run the academy. “In talking with a lot of our coaches, we have noticed that student-athletes are often thrown into leadership positions without the tools or resources to be effective. The Lobo Leadership Academy is intended to bridge that gap and allow our athletes to be the most successful leaders they can be.”

“I am thrilled to have a representative from every team and cannot wait to get started.”

“This is going on my fourth year at UNM. I feel like I have grown into a leader in my time here and I have been able to help guys out that don’t necessarily have the same drive as I do,” Aaron Jenkins of the UNM football team said. “I am honored to have been selected to the Lobo Leadership Academy and am excited to become a better leader so that I can lead my guys to want to be leaders as well.”
