ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The UNM Lobo Club held its annual Lobo Club Golf Tournament last Friday, June 23 at Santa Ana Golf Club. This year’s record breaking event featured a sold out tournament field of 48, three-person teams, with numerous UNM coaches, administrators and Lobo Legend Danny Granger in attendance.
The annual golf tournament is one of the Lobo Club’s signature events and raises money for student-athlete scholarships at The University of New Mexico. This year’s event raised an all-time high $43,993.47. The 2017 tournament presented by Jaguar Land Rover Albuquerque was a three-person scramble format tournament with the overall winning team winning a trip to play in the Acura Alumni Team Championship at Pinehurst Resort in late October 2017. This year’s winning team was comprised of Jim Ottmann, Mike Putnam, and Dale Scott representing the UNM Alumni Lettermen Association. The team shot an outstanding score of 56.
Lobo Legend Danny Granger came back to attend this year’s golf tournament and join in the fun. “As a loyal UNM supporter I’m always up for being involved in any event that raises money to help support the programs and scholarships for the student-athletes.” Granger continued, “The opportunities that UNM afforded me as far as getting my education through my scholarship was pretty much invaluable to my successes as not only as a basketball player, but also in the business world, as a father and as a husband. It’s something I truly cherish!”
Acting Athletic Director Janice Ruggiero shared her thoughts on this year’s tournament and the amount of support that was present throughout the day Friday, “At the end of the day, you’re supporting 450 student-athletes. The reason these kids get to go to school and have a scholarship is because every one of these people come out and support Lobo athletics. We are so fortunate that we are supported by this community!”
The Lobo Club Golf Tournament will return to Santa Ana Golf Club next year on Friday, June 8, 2018.
The Lobo Club’s next signature event is the 2017 Cherry & Silver Scholarship Gala (formerly known as the Howl of a Good Time Auction) and it will be on Friday, August 18 at the Hyatt Regency.
