D1 BASEBALL ALL-AMERICAN TEAMS
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — National awards keep rolling in for the University of New Mexico baseball team as third baseman Carl Stajduhar was named third team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and honorable mention All-American by Perfect Game/Rawlings while outfielder Luis Gonzalez was selected second team All-American by D1 Baseball and third team All-American by Perfect Game/Rawlings on Wednesday.
Stajduhar, who was also selected in the 18th round of the MLB Draft by the New York Mets on Wednesday, hit .350 this season and led the Lobos with 17 home runs, 69 RBI and 65 runs to go along with 16 doubles and two triples. He sits in the top 30 nationally in home runs, RBI, runs and slugging percentage.
The Fort Collins, Colorado, native has been selected to at least one All-American team in each of his three seasons for the Lobos – a freshman All-American in 2015 and a Louisville Slugger All-American (third team) last season. Stajduhar this season was also named a Collegiate Baseball News All-American (third team), a CoSIDA Academic All-American (third team) and a preseason All-American.
Gonzalez, who was selected in the third round of the MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, hit .361 in 2017 for the Lobos with eight home runs, 22 doubles (led team), 42 RBI, 62 runs and a team-best 14 stolen bases in 55 games. He set a school record and is in the top 10 in the nation with 58 walks, helping him become the 12th player in UNM history to finish with a .500 or better on-base percentage in a season (finished the season with exactly a .500 on-base percentage). This is Gonzalez’s first postseason All-American honor (he was also selected a preseason All-American).
A Lobo has been named an All-American in 12 of the previous 15 seasons with UNM having 20 All-Americans selected over that span.
Along with Stajduhar and Gonzalez being selected All-Americans on Wednesday, the duo were also both selected to the ABCA/Rawlings Midwest All-Region Second Team.
