NEW YORK, N.Y. — Blaise Fountain, a senior center with The University of New Mexico, is one of 63 collegiate centers named to the Rimington Trophy Spring Watch List. He is the first Lobo named to the watch list for the Rimington since LaMar Bratton in 2014.
The Rimington Trophy honors the nation’s top center. It is sponsored by the Boomer Esiason Foundation in New York. Pat Elfien of Ohio State University was the 2016 winner.
Fountain is one of seven Mountain West student-athletes to be named to the Rimington Spring Watch List. Last year, he played every meaningful snap at center for the Lobo offense which broken school records for scoring and total offense and led the Mountain West in total offense. The Lobo offense with Fountain calling the signals led the nation in rushing, averaging 350.0 yards per game. Additionally UNM led the nation in total rushing yards, rushing yards per carry, and runs of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 yards.
Fountain is one of four returning starters on the offensive line for UNM in 2017 as the Lobos will look to make a third straight bowl game for just the second time in school history. Last year UNM went 9-4, winning a share of the Mountain Division title, its first title since 1997. The Lobos defeated UTSA 23-20 in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, UNM’s second bowl win in 56 years.
