Lobos Play Host to San Josè State This Weekend

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After two weeks on the road, the University of New Mexico softball team returns home to play host to San Josè State this weekend.

Possible inclement weather has already played a factor. Friday’s game has been moved from a 5 p.m. start to a 1 p.m. start. More inclement could possibly move Saturday’s game as well. Saturday’s game is currently scheduled for 1 p.m. with Sunday’s game starting at noon.

Series History
The Lobos lead the all-time series 14-12 but the Spartans have won seven of the last nine games.

ABOUT THE LOBOS
The Lobos will look to get back on track this weekend. The Lobos are 20-20 on the year and currently sit tied for sixth in the Mountain West with UNLV with a 6-9 league record. They are coming off a series loss to first-place Utah State. The Lobos fell in a tough battle Friday, 9-7 to the Aggies, but came back and used four home runs to claim a 9-5 win and even the series up 1-1. The Lobos fell again on Sunday, 5-2.

For another straight week, Shelbie Franc continues to be the top hitter in the conference. She leads the league with a .435 average which also ranks 21st in the country. Jasmine Casados continues to be consistent at the plate for the Lobos. She is second in the league in hits with 53 on the year. She also leads the team with 36 RBIs and is second on the team with a .414 average. Chelsea Johnson is a power threat for the Lobos. She hit .500 last weekend and leads the team with five home runs along with D’Andra DeFlora and Michala Erickson.

In the circle, the Lobos are looking to find a consistent grove. Krissy Fortner, the Lobos primary closer, leads the staff with a 5-3 record and 3.72 earned run average. Tess McPherson and Jensen Main are both the main starters for the Lobos. McPherson is 8-10 on the year with a 4.26 ERA. Main picked up the lone victory against Utah State to improve her record to 7-6.

ABOUT THE SPARTANS
San Josè State comes into the series with a 29-15 overall record. The Spartans are currently tied for second in the Mountain West with San Diego State with a 9-6 record. They are coming off a series victory against Fresno State. The Spartans fell in game one of the series but fought back to take the next two.

At the plate, the Spartans are hitting .289 as a team. Chelsea Jenner is leading the squad with a .389 average. In the circle, the Lobos will face some tough pitching. Katelyn Linford is the Spartans go-to and is 19-7 on the year. She has a 2.40 ERA and has struck out a league-leading 167 batters in 166 innings of work. She also holds her opponents to a .234 batting average. Linford in fourth in the league in ERA. Her 167 strikeouts ranks 27th in the nation.
